What is Mental Health Liberation?
Mental health liberation is about reclaiming the power to define and pursue well-being outside of oppressive systems and narrow definitions of "normal." It emphasizes dismantling stigma, honoring diverse experiences, and empowering individuals to heal in ways that are authentic and culturally resonant. At its core, mental health liberation challenges systemic barriers while advocating for holistic, accessible, and equitable care for all.
As a mental health therapist, I take the firm stance that mental health access should be a right and standard health services afforded to all, not a just a privilege. Sadly, the medical system in this country is not structured so providers can offer services in a way that is inclusive and accessible to all. To survive the throws of Capitalism, clinicians often have to take insurance or charge private pay fees—further disenfranchising marginalized communities from the access to mental health services they deserve.
I am thankful that there are organizations like Mental Health Liberation who do the hard work to make services like mine accessible to our communities.
